Vehicles from Recycled Materials
Vehicles from Recycled Materials 🚗🚢✈️
PURPOSE OF THE ACTIVITY 🎯
In this activity, we aim to develop sustainability awareness 🌍 through the reuse of waste materials, to support science- and engineering-based thinking skills by exploring different types of vehicles, and to strengthen creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration through the design and production process. At the same time, we aim to develop essential life skills such as planning, responsibility, patience, and self-regulation together.
INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING OUTCOMES (STEAM) 🔬🧮⚙️🎨💻
Science 🔬
Students recognize the basic characteristics of land, air, and sea vehicles. They observe motion, balance, pushing and pulling forces, and how vehicles behave on different surfaces.
Mathematics 🧮
Students recognize and distinguish geometric solids such as cubes, rectangular prisms, cylinders, cones, and spheres in the models. They identify which geometric solid each part of the vehicle design resembles, establish part–whole relationships, and organize their designs by considering shape, size, and symmetry.
Engineering ⚙️
Students generate solutions to the given problem (designing a functional and balanced vehicle model using recycled materials). They recognize the effect of geometric solids on structural strength and select materials accordingly.
Art 🎨
Students create harmony in color, form, and aesthetic composition. They develop original vehicle models by using geometric forms creatively.
Technology 💻
Students document the process by taking photographs, present their work digitally, and share their learning outcomes.
LIFE SKILLS 🌱
This activity enables students to use planning and sequential thinking skills. It develops patience and self-regulation, strengthens a sense of responsibility, and supports the development of cooperation, sharing, creativity, and self-confidence.
MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE ✂️🛠️
Recycled plastic bottles, bottle caps, cardboard boxes, straws, egg cartons, cardboard rolls, and similar materials are prepared.
Materials are sorted and a design plan is created.
The type of vehicle is selected (car, train, ship, airplane, helicopter, etc.).
The parts are assembled appropriately to form the body of the vehicle.
Details such as wheels, propellers, and wings are added.
Balance and durability are checked.
Optional decorations are added.
The completed works are shared and a short reflection is conducted.

Liljana Nezha Primary School "Zigur Lelo"Vlore \Albania
In the Natural Science subject, together with the students, we collected bottle caps and built machines to demonstrate the forces of friction. The students understood how different materials can be reused and turned into useful tools to learn different knowledge and concepts.
Violeta Ramaj School " Mark Trokthi" Lac,Albania
Students built creative boats using recycled egg cartons along with other materials such as cardboard, wooden sticks, paint, and decorative elements, developing their imagination, hands-on skills, and awareness of recycling. ♻️🚢

“How can we classify the model vehicles we built according to where they move?”
🚀 In our From Waste to Vehicle activity, I helped my students gain safe life awareness, recycling consciousness, knowledge of geometric solids, and design and problem-solving skills. I implemented this interdisciplinary activity in alignment with the Türkiye Century Education Model (Maarif Model). ♻️🌍
