Art Journey with Recycled Yarns

Art Journey with Recycled Yarns

PURPOSE OF THE ACTIVITY 🎯

In this activity, we aim to develop sustainability awareness through the reuse of waste materials, to strengthen mathematical thinking skills through patterns, motifs, and geometric shapes, and to grow as productive, creative, and solution-oriented individuals through an interdisciplinary STEAM approach. At the same time, we aim to support essential life skills such as patience, responsibility, planning, and self-regulation together.

INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING OUTCOMES (STEAM) 🔬🧮⚙️🎨💻
Science 🔬
In this activity, students recognize natural and synthetic fiber types and become aware of the sources of the yarns they use. They observe the environmental impact of waste materials and explain the importance of recycling and reuse for environmental sustainability.
Mathematics 🧮
Students create, continue, and extend patterns. They use basic geometric concepts such as circles, center, symmetry, and repetition in practice, thereby developing their mathematical thinking and visual organization skills.
Engineering ⚙️
Students generate solutions to the given problem (designing an aesthetic and structured product using recycled yarns). They make material choices, evaluate the suitability of materials, and experience structural balance throughout the design process.
Art 🎨
Students create color harmony and composition, design motifs, and produce original artworks. They strengthen their creativity and visual expression skills by developing unique designs.
Technology 💻

Students document their process by taking photographs and presenting their work in digital environments. This supports their skills in recording, reflecting on, and sharing their learning process.
LIFE SKILLS 🌱
This activity supports students in using planning and sequential thinking skills. It develops patience and self-regulation, strengthens fine motor skills, and encourages responsibility. It also fosters creativity, self-confidence, cooperation, and a culture of sharing.

Materials and Procedure 🧶✂️🛠️
🔷Cardboard plates or circles cut from recycled cardboard boxes
🔷Recycled yarn / thread pieces
🔷Scissors
🔷A hole punch or the tip of scissors (to make holes around the edges)
🔷(Optional) beads, feathers, buttons, or other recycled decorative items
🔷Prepare circular bases from cardboard plates or cut circles from cardboard boxes and make evenly spaced holes around the edges.
🔷Identify the center of the circle and secure the first piece of yarn.
🔷Wrap the yarn from the center outward to create the planned pattern.
🔷Reinforce symmetry by repeating color and motif sequences.
🔷Add optional decorative elements if desired.
🔷Share the completed works and conduct a short reflection on the process.

The best motive we selected with my students.

My students created their motifs from waste wool. I like the motif because it is regulated and organized.

The students made patterns on plates using sewing, using geometric shapes. They demonstrated their creativity.

The students created decorative patterns on plates through sewing, using various geometric shapes, and demonstrated a high level of creativity in their work.

My students created different motifs with wool brought from home and then chose the most beautiful work.

The most beautiful motive made with leftover wool, by class 5.3
